Nostalgia songs.

The other night, while I took Rosita for a walk, Brandi Carlile's "The Story" began to play on my headphones.

We had a couple "our songs." This was hers, I think. | #NowPlaying "The Story" by Brandi Carlile ♫ https://t.co/2G5sv1VCsI

"The Story" is one of my ex's songs. For years, she loved it and adored it and sang along with it whenever she could. I remember it was one of the songs she wanted me to teach her on the guitar. It's a gorgeous song fleshed with loads of common imagery and Carlile's performance meshes perfectly with the content.

But I don't think it was one of "our songs." It was her song. So of course it sent me deep into the dregs of nostalgic reverie.

We walked down the aisle, just over ten years ago, to Pierce Pettis' "You Move Me."

And we walked down the aisle to this. It's still a good song.| #nostalgia #NowPlaying "You Move Me" by Pierce Petti… https://t.co/Af8IKJhzFi

Our first "date," if you could call it that, was a Pierce Pettis basement show in Delta, BC, back in January or so of 2006. It was only appropriate that we'd walk down the aisle to the song.

And it was appropriate because she did move me for a long time. I'd like to think that our relationship lived up to the ideals that the song promoted. I mean, read it:

But now I'm back on the couch, taking the therapy, heart hanging out. And I guess I'll never get to listen to the song the same again.

Gene Eugene's last songs.

Gene Eugene lead Adam Again and was a member of the Lost Dogs until he died in 2000. He produced a lot of the CDs I grew up with; I often found his name and "Fabulous Green Room" Studio in the liner notes of the alternative CCM albums I loved growing up.

About the songs embedded on the right: I knew these songs were out there, but didn't have a chance to hear them until I rediscovered them on Spotify a couple weeks ago. They're gorgeous, lo-fi tracks that he recorded not long before he died. His unexpected death and the post-mortem uncovering of these recordings give the tracks a sheen of prophecy, of knowing-what-was-coming, of self-awareness that the listener can apply with reckless abandon.

Although his voice was always expressive, these songs take it to a different place. "Dig," "Hide Away," and "Every Mother's Way" each feature his passionate, introspective voice, but these seem particularly heartbroken, yet at peace with the heartbreak.

Friendship is a common theme in Eugene's abortive catalogue: "Waiting For You To Come Around," "Jimmy," "Tree House," and "Homeboys" each explore different types of that deep, intimate friendship that I can empathize with. However, this rendition of "Something About What Happens When We Talk" brought tears to my eyes upon my first listen. I feel as if I can really hear how much certain friendships mean to him through that track. Eugene's ability to develop a wide swath of friendships is well-documented, but this track is enough evidence for me.

Eugene was a great songwriter, but he wasn't prolific. Like Lyle Lovett, he seems to often be a better song interpreter than songwriter. He turns any song he sings, no matter who wrote it, no matter how obscure, into a standard. These three, lo-fi, final tracks are perfect examples of his high expectations for himself. It's good stuff.

Bowie.

I can't add anything to the discussion; too many excellent commentaries have been made about David Bowie since his death a couple weeks ago. "Blackstar" and "Lazarus" are excellent. But the following audio documentary, which covers David Bowie's life between the 1950s-1970s, is really good. I hope they make a similar followup documentary to cover the subsequent decades.

A great little #DavidBowie documentary that follows him from the 1950s-1970s. #podcast https://t.co/FIF9dQnMXY

Apart from his Americana lineage, I don't know nuthin' 'bout Justin Townes Earle. But "Burning Pictures" is a pretty awesome song.
Excellent imagery; great storytelling.
