JEFFREY NORDSTROM

Inspired by Allan Wargon's "Sable Island."

One day I'd love to visit Sable Island. I appreciate that is shows up in the BNA Act as a specific place. I doubt I'll ever get the chance, but it sure seems like it would be a cool place to visit.
A few years ago, I saw this little Humanima episode about Sable Island called "The Challenges of an Untamed Soul." It's pretty good, but I can't find it online.

Here's Rick Mercer on Sable Island. He gets to go everywhere.
Here's an old ducumentary about Sable Island, just posted online a couple days ago. It's got some gorgeous imagery and appears in glorious, crisp HD.

Well, I hope so:

There was a mediocre Twilight Zone episode sort-of about this starring Jason Alexander.

As much as I love The Corporation...

I've been suspicious of this one for a while now. I've heard that this was a myth from a few different sources, but I sort of didn't want to believe it.

I'm pro-GMO. The arguments from the anti-GMO folks don't convince me.

But I'm not a big fan of big corporations.

So reading stuff like this pulls me in two different directions:
  1. I WANT TO HATE THE BIG CORPORATE MONSTER: When big corporations screw up, I'm happy because it confirms my biases. When I hear that the anti-corporation people have fabricated stuff, however, it frustrates me. I want to hate the corporations, but you don't have to lie about it.
  2. I WANT SCIENCE TO GAIN THE RESPECT IT DESERVES: Numerous peer-reviewed studies have shown that GMOs don't cause problems. If we want to feed the world, we need GMOs to help us. So I'm happy that science gets confirmed again.

So articles like this suck because they don't confirm both my biases.

I think I'm with recording myself for a while.

Last night I think I finished playing and singing the last parts for the demos. My personal performances are done. Now it's just a matter of getting all the other parts recorded by other people. Now's when I need to be driving all over the Lower Mainland and Island to gather voices and a couple instruments. Woo hoo!

It's a shame that the end is still so far away, but this is a good plateau. This means that I can mix things as well as I possibly can and focus on getting other participants on the project.

The Satanic Panic.

I recently listened through the entire "Satanic Panic" episode of The Thinking Atheist. I enjoyed it because it brought back a lot of memories. Although I was pretty young when the Satanic Panic was actually taking place, I saw a lot of the aftermath. By the time I grew aware of it, most of the popular materials were dated and cheesy.

The Thinking Atheist recently posted an entire episode based on the era.
Of course, these sorts of fears and interests haven't disappeared. It's not exceptionally difficult to find remnants of the "Panic" on the Internet. YouTube has become a wonderful archive of all the ephemeral kitsch that should have disappeared long ago.
Each preacher would focus on something different: some would discuss Marilyn Manson's sensibilities; some would focus on backwards masking; some would focus on the "primitive" backbeat; some would focus on the unholy lives of rock and roll musicians.

And there's always the famous Chick Tract where Satan assumes the role of a manager for a rock band and indoctrinates them into Satanism.

Every once in awhile, a preacher gets up there and rants against rock and roll. There are websites that have been up since the early days of the Internet that explain the horrors of rock and roll. Like this one. But rock and roll stays rocking and evolves into other wild and crazy genres. They can't win. I mean, there's always something horrible to suggest about every genre of music. Although heavy metal and rock and roll are easy targets, as a teenager, I bought a record of meditative Orthodox chants and my mother expressed concern that we didn't know what they were saying or who they were praising; I've also heard that chanting puts you into a state that opens you to possession by demons and spirits. In other words, if you want it, Satan's gonna' find his way into everything if you let him go there.

Besides, wouldn't it be fun to sing a bunch of songs in the tune of old hymns, while uttering utter obscenity and blasphemy? I'd love to do that, but I doubt I'll ever burn my precious time on something so self-indulgent. There's enough bloodlust and praise of human sacrifice in old hymns that I don't need to parody them.

In the meantime, let's rock!

General update.

Back in March, over Spring Break, I went over to Vancouver Island and got a bit of recording work done. I recorded my wife's cousin for some harmonies on "Lightning, then Thunder," and I recorded some background vocals for "Friday Night."

I spend an evening with my cousin Kelly who showed me a few things I could do to mix my songs a little better. He showed me some of the music he's made with Sound of Contact and Kuba Oms. I hope to work with him this summer to get them mixed and mastered to an acceptable level.

Here are the recording tasks that still need to get done.
I need to get Rosanna, my wife's cousin, to sing on "Living the Dream."
I need to sing harmonies on "35, 17" and a couple other tracks.
I'd like to record my friend Kate's voice on "The Long Run" and "Business or Pleasure"
I need to record my friend Brianna's voice on "Business or Pleasure" and "I Still See You."
I need to record my uncle Monte's guitarwork on "Living the Dream."
I need to record my sister-in-law's voice on the beginning of "Soothe Me."
I need a quiet place to record some quiet percussion, like egg shakers. This will be easier during the summer.
I need to record Gord's pianowork on "Lightning, then Thunder."
I need to get Bob to record a sax solo on "Friday Night."
I need to get Jon to shout on "Friday Night" and "The People."
It seems like it's a lot, but I don't think it will take very long. Most of these people are in Vancouver or on Vancouver Island. I'll do the Vancouver Island recordings June and July, and I'll get Rosanna's voice recorded in Early June when she comes down from Smithers.

I still haven't been able to play live for awhile. I haven't been in the right headspace at all, especially in regards to self-promotion. But I might have more opportunities to play at the local jam nights in the upcoming months.
