King Crimson's "ProzaKc Blues" is possibly one of their most accessible tracks from their most recent incarnations. I watch the video and can't comprehend how they're putting out so much wonderfully dissonant sounds, with just the four of them on stage. It's amazing stuff.

It's hard to know what to say about this ridiculous one-off. My friend and former bandmate Seth had the Whale CD which contained three tracks. This was one of them. And it's wonderfully fun. It may be the silliest.
I happen to love the song. I think it's a wonderful story song, on par with Michael Knott's "When She's Gone." Both songs are full of wonderful narrative gaps that make for good, good storytelling.
Give "The Coming Home Party" a listen and see if Tiny Tim's own scathing assessment is correct. And give the Lifesavers' "When She's Gone" a listen for good measure. When I think of family vacations, I mainly think of my family's big trips in a 1972 Lincoln Continental. We drove as far East as Ottawa and as far south as Los Angeles in 1986 and 1987: All six of us slept in that beast one night; we ran out of gas on the middle of a bridge; we lost our brakes on the world's curviest street. When things were going well, it looked a little like this: The Lincoln had a cassette deck and a minimal number of cassettes. I enjoyed making mix cassettes at the time, but we also had a cassette of The Best of the Carter Family that my father found on the road. Somebody had thrown it out their window, and we picked it up.
"The Poor Orphan Child" is a rather upbeat song for such a downer of a topic. I've loved Eric Taylor's "Whooping Crane" since I first heard Lyle Lovett's version on his Natural Forces album. Lyle and his band do a bang-up live version too, of course. I'm not sure if I enjoy Eric Taylor's version, but I have to admit that Lyle's perfect interpretations of songs often ruin the original versions for me. I tried to perform a little version of it a couple years ago. There are much better interpretations out there, however. |
