Music to soothe dogs by.

Last night while jamming with Adrian, I put together a basic I-IV bassline on the JamMan. I then started fiddling with the knobs on the green Line 6 Delay Modeling pedal and found this ridiculous, nearly space-like effect. Thinking it was funny, I played a little with it, but tired of the tone in moments.

When I bent down to change the tone, however, Rosita was laying down, nose to the amp. And she kept laying there as if she was totally and utterly invested in the tone. It seemed to soothe Rosita, who is, on any given day, as neurotic as shit.

#Rosita being soothed by delay effects. She placed herself directly in front of the amp. #dogsofinstagram #dogstagram #guitareffects #guitarsolo #guitar #delayeffect #line6 #line6delay #dog

Visualizing what you want.

Raised in the church, I grew familiar with self-help discourse. By the time I was a teenager, I'd heard all about visualizing what you want, seeking out long term goals, and dreaming big. The language of the church was merely a directed form of what I was learning in school culture: to take risks, to make crazy decisions, and realize your dreams. This is familiar territory.

However, familiarity does not necessitate effective action.

Yesterday, while teaching The Great Gatsby to my Grade 11 English students, I came across the following overrun TEDx Talk as a jumping-off point for talking about visualizing your dreams: the idea was to show the students that Gatsby does it and this girl did it, and perhaps it's a good plan. It highlights the need to reframe, visualize, and realize your dreams. There's so good, pedestrian advice here. Although the TEDx Talk itself isn't well-executed, the speaker seems pretty happy with her ability to "program her mind for success."
As I tried to articulate these ideas to my students, however, I came to realize that I have no idea what I want. In bullets,
  • This woman, Carrie Green, used the funeral example: "what do you want people to say about you at your funeral?" But when I think about it, I have no idea about what I want people to say at my funeral. In other words, that visualization trope just doesn't work for me right now.
  • Green said that successful people take crazy risks for their dreams. I have lived a rather safe life and I'm still seriously struggling to even vaguely keep my head above water. I've made decisions that are extremely safe: university degree, professional certificate, healthy marriage with kids, pursuing even higher education. I've done everything the right way, the sale of our house notwithstanding. And I'm not really further ahead for it. In fact, I'm still barely treading water.
  • Green focused on doing things that you're really passionate about. But I don't feel passionate about anything. Passion's a hard one for me to handle or come by. I love making music, but I don't know if I'm passionate about it right now.
I'd like to be successful and apply these ideals to my own life, but when I can't even visualize what I want from life, well, it's a tough sell, even to myself.

Suddenly I realize that I may have fallen into the "No True Scotsman Fallacy" in regards to myself. I've decided that I don't know what I want and I don't know what I'm looking for. It's as if I'm thinking, "No true successful Jeff would...," and I can't help but think I'm misthinking this one altogether.

Let's rest on it for a bit.
