My chaotic life, as I mentioned before, hasn't made room for much music. So the instruments wait.

Two Fridays ago, my wife took this photo of me practicing at band practice. I think it's pretty good. So here it is:
A couple notes about the photo:
Tonight I played at the jam at Echo Island Pub in Harrison Hot Springs again. I started on bass because I didn't want to think of songs to play. Although I know lots of songs, I don't have many memorized. Then they got me to pull my guitar out of the trunk, where I proceeded to humiliate myself. I had never led the "power trio" format before. It was a mess. I wound-up playing songs like "My Best Friend's Girl," "Bad Moon Rising," "With or Without You," and any other songs I could think of that featured simple instrumentation. I usually only remembered the lyrics to disparate portions of unconnected verses.
They even got me to play "Paranoid," which I'd never played before in my life. Barry, on bass, took the vocals and I followed the guitar riff; I learned that I should never play such a thing again. According to reports, I had an enormous grin on my face throughout the song. Last night I joined the jam at Echo Island Pub in Harrison Hot Springs. My wife took this picture while I was playing. There were only four people there, but it was a rather non-intimidating moment for my first playing-in-front-of-people for the last year. I'd like to think it went well, even though I certainly need to learn my queues for the other musicians. I played a few songs that came to mind that I knew I had somewhat memorized, things from my years of listening to K-Tel records and whatnot. My guitar sounded a little dorky, but that's what happens when you have big flatwound strings on a Strat.
I look forward to doing it again sometime. |
