Blank on Blank made a wonderful little video featuring Garrison Keillor.

I don't listen to A Prairie Home Companion very often, but I always enjoy it.

And I love Keillor's honest sentimentality, on display in the down-to-earth ditty, "I Just Wish That She Were Here."

I make DVDs for my daughters of little shorts I find online. I put this short on one that I made this morning. They've been watching it over and over again, hoping to solve the mystery.

When I think of family vacations, I mainly think of my family's big trips in a 1972 Lincoln Continental. We drove as far East as Ottawa and as far south as Los Angeles in 1986 and 1987: All six of us slept in that beast one night; we ran out of gas on the middle of a bridge; we lost our brakes on the world's curviest street. When things were going well, it looked a little like this:

The Lincoln had a cassette deck and a minimal number of cassettes. I enjoyed making mix cassettes at the time, but we also had a cassette of The Best of the Carter Family that my father found on the road. Somebody had thrown it out their window, and we picked it up.

"The Poor Orphan Child" is a rather upbeat song for such a downer of a topic.
