Guitar music.

As I wander around UVic and Victoria, I keep hearing this soulful music that's pretty electronic and cool, but nothing like my own music. My own record, as it's appeared through the process, in spite of its electronic beginnings, is definitely a rock and roll record. I have a feeling that I'm gonna' finally get all this finished this summer and it's going to receive a rather cold reception on account of its guitar-led, classic rock nature.

Who listens to guitar music anymore? Guitars are practically kitsch at this point, a rather archaic mode of sound-making that are almost always played ironically. Like, Jack White is awesome, but I can't help but feel his awesomeness is tinged a little on his ability to tap into our desire for kitsch. Rock's our folk music, as Bono suggested 25 years ago, and synths are the best way to rebel, as Björk suggested, well, 25 years ago.

Listening to my music in a conspicuous location.

I know it's not healthy to compare your own music to other music, but how can I not feel a little out of date? I even tried to make this music sound more modern than my first album, but it still seems to come out entrenched so deeply in the rock tradition that I don't think I can find my way out.

Perhaps I need to admit to myself that I play rock and roll, that rock is my genre. But it's a frightening thing to admit. It's scary to admit that I'm old hat when I haven't even started.

By the way, I'm in Victoria. I'm taking courses at UVic, but I hope to finish a bit of recording at the end of August. I have to record Kate, Monte, Rachelann, and Briellen before I head back to the Mainland to get a couple more voices and a piano. And then I'll be finished! Weird, eh?
